Background
Ḥazon (Revelation) 17 is a pause in the storyline, a parenthetical chapter, just like we saw before in the book. We have just come through the bowls of wrath in Chapter 16, and now the Ruach takes Yoḥanan aside to show him the secret of something very old and very powerful, Mystery Babylon.
This chapter deals with false religion, all the systems that claim to speak for Elohim, but are doctrinally or morally wrong, just as Kĕpha and Yehudah warned in 2 Peter 2:1–3 and Yehudah (Jude) 8–21. It pulls back the curtain on the spiritual side of Babylon, the religious system that has influenced kings, nations, and even large parts of what people call “the church.”
Chapters 17 and 18 work together. Both are like a big bracket in the story.
