Revelation 9 is one of the most sobering chapters in all of Scripture. It opens with the fifth shofar, when a messenger is given the key to the pit of the deep. From it pours thick smoke, darkening the sky, and a swarm of locust-like demons emerges. They are not sent to kill but to torment for five months those without the seal of Elohim, their sting like that of a scorpion.
Their king is named Abaddon in Hebrew and Apolluon in Greek — the destroyer, ruler of the abyss. Then comes the sixth shofar. Four bound messengers at the great river Euphrates are released, prepared for a precise hour, day, month, and year, to kill a third of mankind. A vast army of two hundred million pours forth, riding terrifying horses whose mouths breathe fire, smoke, and sulphur, and whose tails strike like serpents.
Yet the most chilling part…
